Free Check Engine Light Diagnostics Including Video
Since 1995, all vehicles have been equipped with an OBDII port, in which you can use a scan tool/code reader to see what is wrong with your vehicle. The ECU or Computer in your vehicle is actually receiving data from a variety of different sensors to make sure everything is working properly and in sync. We also have a video on youtube if you want to see a quick example.
Even if the code may not be exhaust related, Lou’s Custom Exhaust can still scan the computer’s codes on your vehicle free of charge and quickly.
The most common codes seen are the catalytic converter low efficiency (P0420), Oxygen Sensor codes, and EVAP codes (Leak in the evaporative emissions system). Once the problem is fixed, the code can then be erased.
If you are getting the problem fixed to shut the light off for a state inspection you will have to drive about 100 miles. This is because it takes about 100 miles for the car's computer to recognize the problem is fixed and change its status from "Not Ready (code manually cleared)" to "Ready". This is something that is key for Massachusetts annual vehicle inspections.
So if you are having trouble swing on by our Hyannis, Plymouth, Quincy, or Westport shop and we can let you know what is going on!
